Summary: Reduction in CO2 Emissions Achieved by 2004

In summary, the reduction in CO2 emissions realized by the steel industry as of 2004 through concerted efforts to save energy and to effectively use plastic waste in the production processes amounted to 10.1 million tons compared to 1990 levels.
Meanwhile, by providing international technical cooperation and supplying society with higher-performance steel products and by-products, the contribution of the steel industry to reducing CO2 emissions in areas outside the energy boundary of the steel industry virtually equaled its contributions within the energy boundary.
The steel industry is firmly committed to pursuing greater energy savings in the iron- and steelmaking processes through the steady implementation of the Voluntary Action Program. The industry will also maintain an aggressive approach to the task against global warming through the transfer of energy-saving technologies abroad and by contributing to energy savings with steel products and by-products for the industrial, transportation, offices and household sectors.
