ISO14404 User Guide and Calculation Tool

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published a standardized method to calculate CO2 emission intensity from iron and steel production in March 2013. This is the first standard in the world to define the sector-specific calculation method of CO2 emission.

ISO 14404 is based on the Energy Performance Indicator developed under APP (Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate) and worldsteel CO2 Data Collection. In the course of ISO standardization, original methodology of APP and worldsteel was optimized for Blast Furnace (ISO 14404-1), Electric Arc Furnace (ISO 14404-2) and DRI-EAF (ISO 14404-3).
ISO 14404-4: Guidance for using the ISO 14404 series was published in Dec 2020, which provides guidelines for users which part of ISO 14404 series is applicable to their steel plant.

Since the publication of ISO 14404-1 and -2 in March 2013, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation encourages global steel industry to apply ISO 14404 series for energy management in cooperation with Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. For example, Japanese experts conduct steel plant diagnosis in Asian countries (India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) to introduce energy management method using ISO 14404 series and to examine energy saving potential by implementing energy saving technologies.

In order to enable users to benefit from ISO14404 series, Japanese steel experts developed “ISO 14404 User Guide”, “ISO14404 Calculation Tool (for Blast Furnace, Electric Arc Furnace, DRI-EAF and All types of process)”, “ISO14404 Technology Introduction Simulator (for Blast Furnace, Electric Arc Furnace, DRI-EAF and All types of process)” and “ISO 14404-4: Guidance for using the ISO 14404 series.

“ISO14404 User Guide” describes the overview of ISO14404 and offers instruction of “ISO14404 Calculation Tool”, which enables users to calculate CO2 intensity based on ISO14404 methodology, and “ISO14404 Technology Introduction Simulator”, which suggests energy saving potential of energy saving technologies on technology references such as Technologies Customized List.

ISO14404-1, 2 and 3 are available on ISO’s website.
